March of the Nations

On and around the date of the Israeli Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom HaShoa, approximately 50 Marches of Life with the theme 70 years Israel – From the Shoa to new life, “No to Antisemitism, Racism and Israel hatred” take place. The Marches culminate in a large event “March of the Nations” on May 15th, 2018 in Jerusalem with thousands of participants from all over the world to celebrate the anniversary of the Founding of the State of Israel.

The motto of the March of the Nations is “United to be a Light” and is being carried out in close cooperation with the city of Jerusalem. The Mayor of Jerusalem, who will also attend the event, welcomes the March in his city- “I warmly welcome the participants of the March of the Nations in Jerusalem on the occasion of the 70th Anniversary of Israel and I wish this important endeavor much success and all the best”. Members of Knesset and Ministers of different parties in Israel have also expressed their support in video messages.

With the regrettable increase of antisemitic hostility and violent acts in Germany as well as internationally, the message of the March of Life becomes increasingly more timely every year. Besides the tens of thousands who in recent years took to the streets against indifference and silence, this message has reached an audience of millions through a variety of media.

The March of Life movement is based on an initiative by Jobst and Charlotte Bittner from Tübingen and began in 2007 with a march of remembrance from the Swabian Alb to Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. Since then, marches have taken place in over 20 nations and more than 350 cities. With the motto “Remembering – Reconciliation – Taking a stand” the March of Life wants to give Holocaust survivors a voice, promote reconciliation between descendants of perpetrators and victims and take an unmistakable stand against modern antisemitism and for Israel. A unique characteristic of this movement is the willingness of its participants to intensively research and deal with their own family’s and city’s past during National Socialism.
